The ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Grants are a program of the ETH for Development (ETH4D) initiative at ETH Zurich. The program provides grants to support doctoral candidates from low- and lower-middle-income countries who are researching development-related issues.

The grants cover the following components:

  • Mentorship from one ETH professor, senior scientist, or postdoc for one year.
  • A research stay at ETH Zurich for 1-3 months during the mentorship period.
  • A grant of up to 15,000 Swiss francs to cover expenses related to the research stay, such as travel, accommodation, and living costs.

Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program at an accredited university in a low- or lower-middle-income country. Their research must be relevant to development-related issues, such as poverty, inequality, climate change, or sustainable development.

The ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Grants are a valuable opportunity for doctoral candidates from low- and lower-middle-income countries to gain access to world-class research facilities and expertise at ETH Zurich. Research Challenges
The goal of the ETH4D Research Challenges is to enable collaborations on project-based research between ETH researchers, non-academic partners (i.e. private Sector, NGOs, governmental organizations), and partners from low-​ and middle-income countries to develop effective solutions for poverty reduction combining technologies, policies and a profound understanding of human behavior.

Humanitarian Action Challenges
The goal of the ETH4D Humanitarian Action Challenges is to support project-based research between ETH Zurich and EPFL researchers and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to leverage science and technology for a greater impact on humanitarian action.

Eligibilities

  • The doctoral candidate must be registered at a university or research institute in the least developed, low-income, or lower-middle-income country according to the OECD/DAC 2022-2023 list.
  • The doctoral candidate must be enrolled in a full-time doctoral program in a field relevant to ETH4D’s research areas, which include:
    • Sustainable development
    • Poverty alleviation
    • Climate change
    • Health
    • Education
    • Governance
  • The doctoral candidate must have a strong academic record and a clear research proposal.
  • The doctoral candidate must be able to communicate effectively in English.
  • The application must be submitted by the ETH professorship hosting the doctoral candidate.

Application Process

  1. The application needs to be submitted by the ETH professorship hosting the doctoral candidate. Applications directly submitted by the doctoral candidate will NOT be considered.
  2. The application deadline is 31 October 2023.
  3. The application must be submitted electronically in the form.
  4. The application documents must be written in English.
  5. The application documents include:
    • A cover letter that explains the relevance of the mentorship to the doctoral candidate’s research and the benefits of the mentorship to the ETH4D community.
    • A CV of the doctoral candidate.
    • A letter of support from the doctoral candidate’s supervisor.
    • A research proposal that outlines the objectives of the mentorship and the expected outcomes.
    • A budget that outlines the expenses that will be covered by the grant.
