The primary mission of the fellowship is to foster the generation of high-impact research. It specifically supports Ph.D. candidates dedicated to producing pioneering work, whether through generating groundbreaking research publications in top-tier conferences, contributing significant advancements to open-source communities, or pioneering other robust forms of research dissemination. Fellows are integrated into a highly collaborative environment where their academic advisors’ guidance is complemented by the real-world perspective of Bloomberg’s world-class AI/ML researchers and engineers.
The program’s interests span a broad and rapidly evolving spectrum within computational research, reflecting the critical challenges faced in handling massive, complex financial and business data. Specific topics of high priority often include: advancements in Agentic AI and LLM Reasoning, crucial for automating complex decision-making processes; developing robust methods for Code Generation and Semantic Parsing; exploring the frontiers of Human-AI Interaction and data annotation quality; designing sophisticated systems for Information Retrieval and Conversational Systems; and the construction and utilization of powerful Knowledge Graphs and Structured Reasoning frameworks. Furthermore, the fellowship focuses on cutting-edge techniques for LLM Post-training, Domain Adaptation, and Alignment, vital for specialized applications, alongside developing Multi-modal Models for Document Understanding, refining Summarization and Content Generation, and advancing Time-series Modeling specifically for the intricacies of finance. Finally, ensuring the ethical deployment of technology, research into Trustworthy AI and Interpretability remains a crucial focus.

Each year, fellows are required to complete a 14-week paid summer research internship. These internships are hosted in major Bloomberg research hubs, allowing flexibility and exposure to diverse technology ecosystems in New York, London, or Toronto. This mandatory applied research experience ensures that the academic work remains anchored in practical relevance, accelerating the translation of scientific discovery into scalable real-world solutions. Additionally, the fellowship convenes annually for an academic year kickoff event at the Bloomberg Headquarters in New York, fostering a sense of community and connection among the cohorts.

- The fellowship will cover 100% of the recipient’s tuition.
- Recipients will be given a stipend of USD 45,000 to cover their living expenses and to attend professional conferences or for research expenses, such as computer hardware.
- Fellows will receive a salary while completing a 14-week paid summer research internship each year at Bloomberg in New York, London, or Toronto.
- Access to guidance, mentorship and career counseling from Bloomberg’s leading AI/ML researchers and engineers.
- Bloomberg will bear all expenses related to the recipient attending the academic year kickoff event each fall at Bloomberg Headquarters in New York (unless the event takes place online-only).
Eligibilities
- Applicants must be full-time doctoral students during the 2026-2027 academic year, with an expected Ph.D. graduation date in or before the end of 2029.
- Recipients must remain enrolled as full-time students for the duration of the grant. If this status is not maintained, the remainder of the grant will be forfeited.
- Recipients must attend the academic year kickoff event each fall at Bloomberg Headquarters in New York (unless the event takes place online-only). Bloomberg will bear all expenses related to the recipient attending this event.
- Recipients must complete a 14-week summer internship in New York, London, or Toronto for each year of their fellowship. This is a paid research internship and the project will be research-focused.
- Recipients may not be supported by any other industry fellowships for the duration of the Bloomberg fellowship. Non-industry funding may be permitted on a case-by-case basis.
- Recipients may not be employed outside of their university for the duration of the fellowship without explicit permission from Bloomberg.
- Bloomberg will not provide sponsorship for any U.S. visa. Those who have a self-sponsored work authorization (i.e., F-1 OPT or other EAD, etc.) covering the full internship or fellowship period are eligible to apply.
Application Process
- Submit your Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- Submit A two-page research proposal (excluding references), which contains the proposed work directed at a technical audience.
- The research proposal should adhere to the formatting guidelines described in the Overleaf template provided by Bloomberg. Failure to do so will result in the application not being reviewed.
- Submit A reference letter from the applicant’s advisor or proposed advisor and, optionally, an additional referee.
- The applicant will be prompted to provide contact information of the referee at application submission time. The referees will upload their letters directly to the system.
- It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure the reference letter’s are submitted by the application deadline.
