Whether you bring to life an idea to connect friends and family using Messenger, an educational experience using Spark AR, or a natural language chatbot solution supporting businesses using Wit.ai, Facebook is excited to support you as you innovate for impact.

Facebook will also be providing a free swag giveaway to each team member from an eligible submission, as well as some amazing cash prizes and Oculus virtual reality headsets for the winning teams.

Facebook Augmented Reality Hackathon

Spark AR helps creators imagine, build and share augmented reality experiences that reach the billions of people on Facebook and Instagram.

Whether you’re a beginner, using Spark AR templates and libraries to create your first effect, or an experienced pro, using customizations to build more interactive experiences — it’s time to put your imagination and creativity to the test.

They invite all creators to make and submit a Spark AR World Effect that helps enrich communities or supports a larger social good.

Facebook Hackathon: Messaging

Building lasting relationships through conversation – that’s how messaging experiences like Messenger enable connections to thrive amongst billions of people.

Are you ready to put your skills to the test? It’s time to challenge yourself!

Solutions like chatbots have come a long way, and now you can take them even further. Whether you’re just getting started or an experienced pro, they invite you to build and submit Messenger experiences that leverage at least one of the following features: Handover Protocol, One-Time Notifications, Private Replies, and Quick Replies.

Not only is this a chance to put your skills to the test and learn something new, but you’ll also connect with a global community of like-minded developers, benefit from educational resources and be in the running to win some awesome cash prizes.

Facebook Hackathon: AI

Facebook is passionate about bringing the world closer together by advancing artificial intelligence – connecting people to what they care about, powering new, meaningful experiences, and advancing the state-of-the-art through open research and accessible tooling.

Whether you’re just getting started, or an experienced pro, they invite you to submit a solution featuring natural language interactions that leverage the Wit.ai platform.

Not only is this a chance to put your skills to the test and preview the refreshed Wit.ai, but you’ll also discover that you don’t need to be an AI/ML developer to build powerful natural language experiences that can solve real problems right away.

In addition, you will connect with a global community of like-minded developers, benefit from educational resources and be in the running to win some awesome cash prizes.

What to build: Use Wit.ai to build Natural Language experiences that can help people’s lives.

As Facebook sees natural language extend experiences on connected devices, they encourage you to build solutions that connect people and drive greater productivity. Whether it’s local discovery, small businesses serving their neighbourhoods, or learning a new skill with your friend – they believe the true potential of this platform is unlocked when we build new and engaging ways for their users to connect with products they love.

What to build: Using Spark AR Studio, create a World AR effect for Instagram. World effects layer AR experiences on surfaces, objects, and people in your environment, and are viewable using the world-facing camera on your smartphone (not the self-facing camera). Full guidelines can be found here: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/messenger-platform/app-review/ The entire process will take approximately 1-2 weeks.
