Spark AR helps creators imagine, build and share augmented reality experiences that reach the billions of people on Facebook and Instagram.

Whether you’re a beginner, using Spark AR templates and libraries to create your first effect, or an experienced pro, using customizations to build more interactive experiences — it’s time to put your imagination and creativity to the test.

What to build: Use Wit.ai to build Natural Language experiences that can help people’s lives.

As Facebook sees natural language extend experiences on connected devices, they encourage you to build solutions that connect people and drive greater productivity. Whether it’s local discovery, small businesses serving their neighbourhoods, or learning a new skill with your friend – they believe the true potential of this platform is unlocked when we build new and engaging ways for their users to connect with products they love.

Facebook Hackathons: AR

What to build: Using Spark AR Studio, create a World AR effect for Instagram. World effects layer AR experiences on surfaces, objects, and people in your environment, and are viewable using the world-facing camera on your smartphone (not the self-facing camera). They can’t wait to see how you augment your world!

Facebook Hackathon: Messaging

What to build: Build Messenger experiences that leverage at least one of the following features: Handover Protocol, One-Time Notifications, Private Replies, and Quick Replies.

Application Process

  • Facebook Augmented Reality Hackathon
    • Demo Video. Your video (hosted on Facebook Video, YouTube, Vimeo, or Youku) should be around 2 minutes, include a demo of your working application via a step-by-step visual demo, and be available in English. Be sure to talk about the Spark AR Studio features you used to build your effect.
    • Access. Please submit the Share link to the Instagram Spark AR effect (which includes the effect ID) and link to GitHub containing project file. If your effect is not yet published, share the preview/testing link.
    • Complete submission form. All required fields must be completed and submitted on Devpost BEFORE the deadline. Late entries will NOT be accepted.
  • Facebook Hackathons: AR
    • Demo video. Your video (hosted on Facebook Video, YouTube, Vimeo, or Youku) should be around 2 minutes, include a demo of your working application via a step-by-step visual demo, and be available in English. Be sure to explain how Facebook products used enhances the experience of your solution!
    • Access. A way to access your chatbot in one of the following ways:
      • Option 1: Make your bot publicly available by completing the app review process. In order to make the bot live to all Facebook users, you will need to complete app review and demonstrate that your bot is working. Full guidelines can be found here: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/messenger-platform/app-review/ The entire process will take approximately 1-2 weeks.
      • Option 2: Make your bot available for select users. Since app review might take some time, for the purpose of this hackathon, you can put your app in dev mode and add a tester in your app settings. That way, judges will be able to test your bot even when your app is in development mode. Please use test user account id: 499418056 and stef.devpost.1
    • Complete submission form. All required fields must be completed and submitted on Devpost BEFORE the deadline. Late entries will NOT be accepted.
  • Facebook Hackathon: Messaging
    • Demo video. Your video (hosted on Facebook Video, YouTube, Vimeo, or Youku) should be around 2 minutes, include a demo of your working application via a step-by-step visual demo, and be available in English.     • Access. A way to access your working web or mobile application, chatbot, smart home devices and your Wit.ai app ID for judging and testing.
