The research questions for this special call must help to address the prevention of a spread of an infectious disease in African countries or help to mitigate the negative impact of a pandemic/epidemic on people’s health or livelihoods living on the African continent. A focus on the current Coronavirus – COVID-19 crisis is encouraged, but not required.

Proposals need to address a clearly defined research question that has the objective of creating a positive impact for communities in a low- or lower middle- income country. The challenges addressed must be relevant for poor people in low- and middle-income countries. Preference will be given to low-income countries.
The goal of the ETH4D Research Challenges is to enable collaborations on project-based research between ETH researchers, non-academic partners (i.e. Private Sector, NGOs, Governmental Organizations) and partners from the Global South to develop effective solutions for poverty reduction combining technologies, policies and a profound understanding of human behavior.

- Grant sum: 10 – 50 kCHF
- Matching Funds: The applicant and/or project partners must provide 50% of the requested grant sum in the form of cash contributions.
- Project duration: 6 – 18 months
Eligibilities
- A team of academic and non-academic institutions from Switzerland and African countries can formulate an ETH4D challenge.
- The team must consist of at least one ETH4D member as the main applicant.
- An ETH4D member is a professor of ETH Zurich and includes his/her group members, such as doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and senior scientists.
- If the main applicant is not a professor, the proposal must be accompanied by a letter of commitment by the host professor, indicating his/her financial contribution to the project.
- ETH Zurich research groups, which are not yet a member of ETH4D, can also apply and will become a member if they are awarded an ETH4D Research Challenge Grant (ETH4D RCG). It is highly encouraged to team up with a non-academic partner such as industry, a NGO or a policy organization and/or a partner (academic or non-academic) from an African country even though we understand it is difficult in these special times.
