Call for Application: The Royal Society Africa Prize 2026 is open now !!!
The Royal Society Africa Prize is to recognize research scientists based in Africa who are making an innovative contribution to the sciences. The medal is of bronze and is awarded annually. Winners will receive a grant of £15,000 to support their research and a personal gift of £2,000. The prize was previously the Royal Society Pfizer Award, which was last awarded in 2016.

The Prize is intended for researchers at a senior stage (more than 15 years post-PhD) of their research career, with the potential to build a research project to follow on from the prize. The research must be based in Africa. Nominations can be made by senior academics and members of the national academies of science. The project and nominee should be linked with an African center of excellence, which would normally be a university or equivalent research center.

Grants are made to be spent on the research project, and the Royal Society should be
notified of any alteration to this project. The grant is intended to be spent on a research project that has the potential to continue after the 12 months of the grant. It is designed to promote capacity building within Africa and will be made in one payment after attending the Royal Society to deliver the Prize Lecture and the awarding ceremony.
The Award application requires a nomination. The Royal Society is keen to receive nominations for the very best candidates that represent the full diversity of the scientific community, from a broad range of academic institutions, career stages and industries, as well as international nominations (where eligible). Awards that come with a prize lecture are awarded to outstanding scientists who are also exceptional communicators. A good nomination for this type of award should provide evidence that the nominee is an engaging and experienced communicator. All nominations must be submitted using the Royal Society Awards system.
