Established in 1980, they are committed to peace, justice and sustainability for all.

Each year, they present the Right Livelihood Award. By recognizing the actions of brave visionaries and building impactful connections around the world, the Award boosts urgent and long-term social change. 190 Laureates from 74 countries have received the distinction to date. However, their work goes beyond only presenting the Award. They provide these change-makers with long-term support. They work to raise their profile, highlight their solutions, provide protection when their lives and liberty are in danger and link them and their innovative solutions to academia. They believe that lasting change requires concerted action based on diverse solutions. They do their part by nurturing a growing community of courageous change-makers, connecting them and their solutions worldwide.

Nominations for the Right Livelihood Award are fully open to the public and can be submitted through their online form. Nominations are accepted in English, French and Spanish and can be submitted from mid-December until early March.

The prestige and global recognition that come with the Right Livelihood Award open new doors to decision-makers. Their UN-based advocacy work offers platforms and allies for Laureates to advance their causes. They also highlight the Laureates’ visionary work online and in the media, increasing their influence. By telling the Laureates’ stories and partnering with universities around the world, they inspire everyday action by people from all walks of life.

Besides the prize money, the Award often leads to increased funding from donors who want to support outstanding change-makers. With more resources at hand, Laureates can further expand their pioneering work.

Once a nomination has been received, they will reach out directly to the nominee for some points of information and their formal consent, which is a key aspect of their “do no harm” principle.
