Nominations are now invited for The MIDORI Prize for Biodiversity 2020.
The MIDORI Prize is a biennial international prize co-organized by the AEON Environmental Foundation and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) that honors three individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. It aims to encourage positive action for biodiversity and inspire others by showcasing the notable work of those it honors.

Established by the AEON Environmental Foundation during the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, this year will mark the sixth time that the MIDORI Prize is being awarded.
The Prize will be awarded at a special ceremony organized in Tokyo on 18 September 2020, prior to the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the CBD. On the same day, The AEON Environmental Foundation will hold an event to mark the 30th Anniversary of its establishment, with all past MIDORI Prize winners invited for a panel discussion.
The solicitation of candidates shall be carried out based on nomination through the Foundation’s website. The Selection Committee conducts the first screening of the nominated candidates. Based on the list of candidates provided by the Selection Committee, the Judging Committee conducts the further documentary examination. The winners are finally selected from the shortlisted candidates at the Judging Committee Meeting.

The MIDORI Prize is awarded every two years to three individuals who are each honored at a special award ceremony and who each receive a wooden plaque, a commemorative gift and a monetary prize of 100,000 US dollars.
Eligibilities
Candidates are required to satisfy at least one of the following:
- Have made outstanding achievements that greatly contribute to biodiversity (Achievement).
- Have the ability to influence future activities related to biodiversity (Potential).
- Have conducted work that has impacts on various activities for biodiversity around the world (Impact).
Accomplishments will be assessed on the following:
- International contribution
- Contribution to conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity
- Social contribution
- Long-term perspective and continuity
- Creativity and originality
- Openness for civil society
- Efficacy and influence
