Applications for the 2024 Harry Frank Guggenheim Emerging Scholar Awards are now open.

Proposals that promise to further knowledge of the origins, expressions, and management of violence and aggressiveness are invited to the Foundation from any branch of the scientific and social sciences as well as related fields. Research addressing the pressing issues of violence in the modern world—what causes it, how it functions, and what stops or lessens it—gets top emphasis. The Foundation is interested in violence related to many subjects, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • War
  • Crime
  • Terrorism
  • Family and intimate-partner relationships
  • Climate instability and natural resource competition
  • Racial, ethnic, and religious conflict
  • Political extremism and nationalism

The Foundation is in favour of research that looks at the fundamental mechanisms that lead to the production of violence, but proposals that provide strong evidence for the applicability of any results for measures meant to lessen these negative effects are given priority. Similarly, historical study is taken into consideration to the degree that it relates to a violent scenario that exists today.

Candidates may be nationals of any nation and enrolled in any college or university worldwide. The Award is meant to help a doctorate candidate finish their dissertation on time and in a way that furthers the Foundation’s research aims, which are outlined above, rather than to finance doctoral research. It is exclusively offered to students as support throughout their last year of doctoral studies. Typically, this indicates that writing has started or will start at the start of the award period, and fieldwork or other research is finished. An application should not be filed if the analysis and writing are not advanced enough for the candidate to be certain that the dissertation will be finished within the award year.

Final decisions are made by the HFG Board of Directors at its meeting in June 2024. Applicants will be informed promptly by email of the Board’s decision. Awards ordinarily commence on September 1, but other starting dates (after July 1) may be requested if the nature of the project deems this appropriate.

Benefits

  • The award is $25,000 for one year.

Eligibilities

  • Applicants for an award must be Ph.D. candidates entering the dissertation stage of graduate study.

Usually, this means that fieldwork or other research is complete and writing has begun or will at the beginning of the award period. If analysis and writing are not far enough along for an applicant to be confident that the dissertation will be completed within the award year, an application should not be submitted. In some disciplines, particularly experimental fields, research and writing can reasonably be expected to be completed within the same year, and in those cases, it is appropriate to apply.

Eligible Regions: Open for All.
