On behalf of the National Participant Network, the GBIF Secretariat is pleased to invite nominations for the 2023 Graduate Researcher Award. This annual program aims to encourage and recognize innovative research and discoveries in biodiversity informatics by graduate students whose master’s and doctoral studies rely on GBIF-mediated data.

The award criteria are as follows:

  • Originality and innovation
  • The use and strategic importance of the data accessible by GBIF
  • Measurable effectiveness and impact to advance biodiversity informatics and/or biodiversity conservation.
  • Proposals that are not selected may be updated and resubmitted for consideration in subsequent years.

Fellows are expected to acknowledge GBIF support when disseminating the results of their research through peer-reviewed publications, presentations at professional meetings, and other media.

GBIF is an intergovernmental initiative. Its members – formerly known as “participants” – are made up of countries, economies, and international organizations that work together to promote free and open access to biodiversity data.

Each participating country has a designated node responsible for coordinating national GBIF-related activities. Since 2008, the GBIF Network has cultivated collaboration by creating and strengthening regional networks within the community. In 2011, the GBIF Board approved the creation of the Node Steering Group, made up of representatives from each of the six regions listed above the map.

Upon joining the network, new participants are encouraged to collaborate within the region they have selected or assigned to them. The bi-annual regional meetings allow participants to tackle common tasks and problems, define regional priorities, and stimulate specialization in the region.
