More than 250 outstanding World Habitat Awards projects have been recognized over the years, demonstrating substantial, lasting improvements in living conditions. Initiated in 1985, the annual World Habitat Awards competition attracts projects which provide an outstanding contribution to people’s living conditions in a variety of contexts. world Habitat is recognized by the Department of Public Information of the United Nations. Since 2006 we have held Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, reflecting our work in support of the goals of UN-Habitat.

Over the years, a large range of excellent habitat projects was identified in the countries of the global North and the global South. These projects of different sizes and shapes tackle a wide range of housing issues. From the very beginning, the focus has been not only on the identification of good housing practices but also in the sharing of knowledge and experience to others who can transfer them in their own situations.

The organization World Habitat finds, support, share and celebrate those ideas and actions that have an overwhelmingly positive impact on individuals, families, and communities. They want to make housing, not an investment, or a dream, but a basic right for everyone. The World Habitat Awards – organized in partnership with UN-Habitat – recognize and highlight innovative, outstanding and sometimes revolutionary housing ideas, projects and programmes from across the world. Through peer exchanges and their networks, they bring people and ideas together – from major global institutions and national governments to grass-roots organizations and local communities.

They champion those communities that take control of solving their own housing needs. They initiated and are now working with thirteen cities to end street homelessness through the European End Street Homelessness Campaign.
