2021 Better Working World Data Challenge

Are you a person who craves a challenge and wants to make the world a better place? EY and Microsoft are looking just for you! They are seeking problem solvers and analysts. You just need to be a university student or have less than two years of professional experience.

EY’s purpose is to build a better working world. The insights and quality services they provide help build trust and confidence in the capital markets and in economies the world over.

The 2021 Better Working World Data Challenge asks participants to develop an automated fire-edge detection and forecasting model using airborne and satellite imagery from NASA, the European Space Agency, and Geoscience Australia to help tackle the global threat of bushfires.

This year’s challenge has two components:

  1. Challenge 1: Build a system to detect fire-edges in infrared linescan images
  2. Challenge 2: Build a system to map the location and behavior of fire-edges in satellite images

Looking for fully-funded opportunities, install the Youth Opportunities Android or iOS App here.

Both challenges are designed to help streamline the process of bushfire mapping for bushfire authorities. Using data science and advanced analytic tools, the task is to map the location of the fires based on observations in the provided data. Once the results have been submitted, the model can be continued to be refined over time to achieve a higher score.

Submission requirements and evaluation:

Note that participants are invited to use whatever technologies and/or methodologies they feel would be most appropriate for the challenge at hand. The results must be submitted on the platform.

If selected are selected as a finalist, candidates will be provided instructions on how to submit their results and supporting documentation, which should include an explanation of methodologies and algorithms used, along with any code leveraged, assumptions made and any insights identified.

Finalists will also be required to submit a video presentation of their work. Evaluation criteria will be shared once the finalists are announced.

Candidates will also be required to provide any code and external datasets leveraged, so be sure they have used only publicly available data and that your code and methodology are robust and repeatable.
