2019 Wiki Loves Monuments in Nigeria Photography Contest
  • September 1 - 30, 2019

Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) is an annual international photographic competition held during the month of September, organised worldwide by Wikipedia community members with the help of local Wikimedia affiliates across the globe. Participants take pictures of local historical monuments and heritage sites in their region, and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. The aim of the event is to highlight the heritage sites of the participating countries with the goal to encourage people to capture pictures of these monuments, and to put them under a free license which can then be re-used not only in Wikipedia but everywhere by everyone.

The first Wiki Loves Monuments competition was held in 2010 in the Netherlands as a pilot project. The next year it spread to other countries in Europe and according to the Guinness Book of Records, the 2011 edition of the Wiki Loves Monuments broke the world record for the largest photography competition. In 2012, the competition was extended beyond Europe, with a total of 35 participating countries. During Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, more than 350,000 photographs of historic monuments were uploaded by more than 15,000 participants. In 2013, the Wiki Loves Monuments competition was held across six continents including Antarctica and had official participation from more than fifty countries around the world. The 2016 edition of WLM was supported by UNESCO and saw 10,700 contestants from 43 countries who submitted 277,000 photos.

Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation joined the completion in 2016 with the primary aim of creating visibility for Nigerian monuments. As of 2014, according to the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, there are 65 declared monuments in Nigeria and 100 proposed monuments. Unfortunately, less than 35% of the declared monuments in Nigeria are covered in the database of the world largest photographic by Guinness Book of records. None of the 100 proposed monuments is featured in this database. Though, in reality, there are uncountable monuments that are scattered through the length and breadth of Nigeria. Therefore, Starting from 1st-31st December, submission is accepted on monuments in Nigeria.

Application Process

They try to keep the competition clean and simple to participate. There are only a few rules for photos to participate in the contest in Nigeria. Let’s quickly go through them. Every submission should be:

  • Self taken and self uploaded;
  • Uploaded during September 2019;
  • During the upload process, you give permission with a CC BY-SA license to re-use the image;
  • Contain a listed monument, which you have identified using the monument identifier (see elsewhere on this page);

Next to that, there are a few practical rules:

  • You should have an activated e-mail address on Wikimedia Commons;
  • If the photo gets deleted for any reason, it is automatically disqualified from the competition;
  • You are responsible for following the law while taking and uploading the photo.

In September, you may upload as many pictures (old or new) as you want of monuments that you have visited. At the end of the month, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures of the monuments in Nigeria to submit to represent in the international finale. The international jury will then announce the international winners in December.
