2019 ILO Essay Competition on the Future of Work

To celebrate its 100 Anniversary, the International Labour Organization (ILO) launched its Essay Competition on The Future of Work.

Undergraduate students in Caribbean Universities are invited to participate in this competition. You are also encouraged to read the report of the ILO Global Commission on the Future of Work launched in January 2019.

Essay guidelines:

  • Topic: the future of work
  • Essay must be a maximum of 1000 words covering all of the following
    • Brief introduction on the current situation of the world of work globally and in the Caribbean (or in your country) in particular. max 200 words.
    • What in the next 20 years do you see as the main global trends with regards to employment and the world of work? max 200 words.
    • What do you see as the future implications of these trends on the Caribbean with respect to its economy, its society and social well-being, its laws etc.? Implications can be both positive and negative. max 300 words.
    • Propose 1-2 concrete solutions or recommendations on how the Caribbean can best prepare for the future trends, ensure the most positive impact and mitigate as much as possible, the negative ones. Describe as thoroughly as possible how the proposed solution/s could lead to the desired change. max 300 words.

 

 

Benefits

The winner of the competition will receive a full scholarship inclusive of tuition, subsistence allowance and travel to attend the summer academy on “The Future of Work”, 12–23 August, 2019 At The International Training Center of the ILO (ITC-ILO), Turin, Italy.

Eligibilities

Open to Undergraduate students from the University of the West Indies, University of Trinidad and Tobago, University of Belize, University of Guyana and all other Caribbean universities.

Eligible Regions: Anguilla, Aruba, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Montserrat, Sint Maarten (Dutch part), Turks and Caicos Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago
