Call for Applications for the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Fellowship 2027!!
Applications are now open for the 2027 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Fellowship, offered by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington in the United States. This two-year postdoctoral research programme is designed for early-career researchers who want to contribute to global health research and develop advanced expertise in measuring the health challenges affecting populations worldwide.

The fellowship is built around the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, one of the world’s major scientific efforts to quantify health loss caused by diseases, injuries, and risk factors. Through this initiative, researchers examine how health outcomes differ across countries, regions, age groups, and populations, providing evidence that can help policymakers and public health professionals make informed decisions. Fellows will have the opportunity to contribute directly to this research while developing the technical and analytical skills needed for a career in health metrics.
Selected candidates will participate in structured research training, including an intensive boot camp, seminars, journal clubs, research roundtables, and short courses. They will also rotate across different IHME research teams, gaining exposure to various areas of global health research and working with experienced scientists. The programme emphasises quantitative research, statistical modelling, programming, and the development of reliable health estimates.
In addition to technical training, fellows will receive mentorship and professional guidance from IHME faculty and senior researchers. They will be encouraged to take ownership of research projects, contribute to scientific publications, present findings at conferences, and communicate research results to broader audiences. This combination of practical research experience and professional development is intended to prepare participants for future leadership roles in global health research.
