Selected scholars have the opportunity to collaborate with Cornell faculty, researchers, and students on interdisciplinary research projects, contribute to curriculum development, and participate in seminars, guest lectures, and academic discussions. Research areas may include sustainable materials, energy systems, decarbonization, food sustainability, and environmental systems. The initiative particularly encourages scholars working on AI for Materials and Energy Systems.

The professorship is designed to foster meaningful, long-term academic engagement through short visits, typically lasting a few days and generally no longer than two weeks at a time. The visiting professor title is normally held for two years, with the possibility of extension, allowing continued collaboration beyond an individual visit.

The program welcomes faculty scholars at all career stages and from diverse geographical backgrounds. It offers a flexible structure that enables participants to maintain their responsibilities at their home institutions while building research connections with Cornell’s interdisciplinary academic community.

Funding is intended primarily to support travel, accommodation, and other expenses associated with short academic visits. Financial support is typically shared between CAISI and the Cornell faculty host or host unit, subject to the proposed visit and available resources.

Interested scholars are encouraged to establish research connections with CAISI and discuss potential collaborations with a Cornell faculty member before nomination. Through its emphasis on collaborative research, knowledge exchange, and interdisciplinary education, the AI4S Visiting Professorship seeks to build sustained partnerships that advance the responsible application of artificial intelligence to sustainability challenges.
