Call for Applications of Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Fellowships and Mentorships!!
The Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Fellowships and Mentorships 2027 are designed to support photographers and visual storytellers documenting environmental and conservation issues and, importantly, the people and communities working toward solutions. The program supports long-term documentary photography projects that explore environmental challenges while highlighting meaningful conservation efforts and local initiatives.

For 2027, Vital Impacts will provide one $20,000 fellowship and six $5,000 fellowships to photographers working on environmental and conservation stories. In addition, 10 emerging photographers will be selected for a yearlong mentorship program offering professional guidance and support. Each fellowship supports one photographer and one documentary project, giving recipients time and financial resources to develop substantial bodies of work.
The program particularly encourages photographers who have an established and meaningful relationship with the communities, places, or environmental issues they want to document. Applicants are expected to demonstrate knowledge, access, trust, and sustained engagement with their proposed subject. Local photographers documenting stories within their own communities are strongly encouraged to apply, although applicants do not necessarily have to permanently live in the location they are documenting.
Selected fellows will receive financial support alongside mentorship throughout the fellowship period. Fellows are expected to develop their proposed project over approximately 12 months, participate in regular check-ins, meet with their mentors, and provide updates on their progress. The final work should represent a meaningful and substantial body of photography suitable for publication, exhibition, or other forms of public engagement.
The 2027 program also includes a new exhibition opportunity through the Festival of Ethical Photography in Lodi, Italy. One of the seven fellowship recipients will later be selected to exhibit their work at the 2027 festival. The festival will cover the costs of producing and installing the exhibition, as well as international travel and accommodation for the selected photographer to attend and present their work.
