The Law & Anthropology Department of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany, offers Dissertation Writing-up Fellowships. The fellowship is intended for doctoral candidates in the final stage of their PhD who need dedicated time and access to research resources to complete their dissertations. Fellows can spend up to four months at the Institute, becoming part of its interdisciplinary research environment and engaging with scholars working across anthropology and legal studies. The department particularly values research that connects empirically grounded ethnographic knowledge with normative thinking and addresses contemporary interactions between legal systems, countries, and communities.

The fellowship focuses on research that has an immediate connection to the Law & Anthropology Department’s research program. For this call, priority will be given to candidates working toward PhDs in anthropology. During their fellowship, participants are expected to actively participate in departmental activities and contribute to the academic environment. Fellows must also prepare a working paper related to their research and present their doctoral research as part of the department’s seminar series. This provides an opportunity for researchers to receive feedback while sharing their work with an interdisciplinary academic community.
The fellowship can be undertaken during either the spring or fall period of 2027. Spring fellowships run from March 1 to June 30, while fall fellowships run from September 1 to December 31. Each fellowship may last up to four months. During this period, successful candidates receive a monthly living stipend from the Institute. The stipend is not taxable and is free from social security obligations, providing financial support while fellows concentrate on completing their doctoral manuscripts.
Before the fellowship begins, the candidate’s principal supervisor and the Director of the Law & Anthropology Department must establish a clear understanding of how the fellowship period will benefit the candidate’s research. They will also discuss how the candidate’s home university and the Max Planck Institute can collaborate during the fellowship. This arrangement is intended to ensure that the research stay contributes meaningfully to the completion of the doctoral dissertation and benefits both academic institutions.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, CV, a chapter of their PhD dissertation as a writing sample, a one- to two-page summary of their doctoral research, copies of university degrees and transcripts, and a recommendation letter from their principal supervisor. The recommendation must confirm that the applicant is sufficiently advanced to complete the doctoral manuscript during the funded period.
