The Thomson Foundation has officially opened applications for the Young Journalist Award 2026, one of the world’s most prestigious competitions for emerging journalists. Organised annually in partnership with the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA), the award celebrates outstanding young journalists whose reporting demonstrates courage, originality, investigative excellence, and a commitment to holding power to account. The competition is designed to recognize talented journalists aged 30 or under who work in countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than USD 20,000. Applicants are invited to submit their strongest published or broadcast journalism from the previous year, showcasing impactful storytelling across print, audio, video, or multimedia platforms.

A panel of experienced international journalists evaluates the submissions based on journalistic quality, public interest, originality, and impact. Three finalists are selected and invited to London to attend the prestigious Foreign Press Association Media Awards, where the winner is announced before an audience of leading editors, journalists, and media professionals. During their visit, finalists also gain the opportunity to meet influential figures in international journalism and visit renowned media organizations, creating valuable networking and professional development opportunities. Eligibilities

  • Applicants should meet the following requirements:
    • Aged 30 years or under.
    • Citizen of or working in a country with a GNI per capita below USD 20,000.
    • Three published or broadcast journalism pieces produced within the required eligibility period.
    • Original work supported by an editor’s verification letter.
    • English translations provided for entries submitted in other languages.
