The Royal Society, in partnership with the British Academy and the Royal Academy of Engineering, has officially opened applications for the APEX Awards 2027. Supported by the Leverhulme Trust, the Academies Partnership in Supporting Excellence in Cross-disciplinary Research (APEX) Awards are designed to encourage innovative, curiosity-driven research that bridges multiple academic disciplines. The scheme targets established independent researchers with a proven track record who are ready to develop new interdisciplinary collaborations that address complex challenges facing society.

Unlike conventional research funding, the APEX Awards specifically support projects that cross the boundaries between science, engineering, the social sciences, and the humanities, making them particularly valuable for research ideas that may not fit within traditional funding streams. Applicants are expected to work with a co-applicant from a different discipline or a different UK institution, ensuring meaningful collaboration throughout the project. Successful applicants can receive up to £200,000 to support staff costs, research expenses, collaborative activities, and teaching replacement, while an additional £10,000 may be requested for public engagement initiatives that help communicate research outcomes to wider audiences. Projects can run for up to 24 months, providing researchers with sufficient time to explore innovative ideas and produce impactful results.

Eligibilities
- Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Be an established independent researcher with a strong research track record.
- Be based at a UK university or eligible not-for-profit research institution.
- Collaborate with a co-applicant from a different discipline or UK institution.
- Propose an interdisciplinary research project that falls across the remits of at least two participating academies.

- Submit all required documents before the application deadline.
- Meet eligibility checks, peer review, and panel assessment before funding decisions are made.
