NLB plays a central role in preserving Singapore’s documentary heritage while promoting research, learning, and cultural engagement. Within its network, the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library stands out as a premier research hub, named after philanthropist Lee Kong Chian. The library houses one of the region’s most significant collections, including early European accounts of Southeast Asia, imprints from Singapore’s earliest printing presses, rare maps, manuscripts, and archival records documenting the social, cultural, and intellectual development of the region. Complementing this, the National Archives of Singapore preserves records of national and historical importance sourced from public institutions, private collections, and international repositories.

The fellowship is designed to promote original scholarship that engages deeply with these rich archival resources. Fellows are required to reside in Singapore throughout the six months and dedicate their time to exploring, analysing, and interpreting the collections. Research areas are diverse, spanning contemporary literature and theatre, social and cultural history, World War II studies, architectural history, and the heritage of various communities within Singapore and Malaya.
Through this programme, fellows are expected to produce meaningful scholarly outputs that contribute to a deeper understanding of Southeast Asia’s past and present. By encouraging the use of its unique collections, the fellowship strengthens Singapore’s position as a leading hub for academic and archival research in the region.
