The interconnected world of the twenty-first century is plagued by profound political, social, and economic turbulence in the form of hunger, energy crisis, disease pandemics, migration crisis, technological innovation, rising inequalities within and among countries, civil wars, inter-state conflicts, and climate driven environmental changes. The world needs pragmatic and innovative governance approaches to address these multifaceted crises. The impact of this polycrisis is felt disproportionately within and across countries. Because concerted efforts to solve these issues often defy existing governance approaches, there is now an urgent need to nurture the skills of young people to think innovatively about new ways to solve them in the local, national, regional, and global contexts. While innovations in science and technology offer incredible opportunities in many facets of contemporary human interactions within countries, and inter-state relations, there is a challenge in understanding how partnerships between the public and private sectors could be crafted to address these issues.

Today, the world has the largest global youth population in all millennia of recorded history. India, the world’s most populous country, and fourth largest economy, has the largest youth population in the world, with about 65% of its people under the age of 35. The UNESCO MGIEP Youth Fellowship on Leadership for Peace and Sustainability builds on this demographic dividend to provide a space to nurture the leadership and problem-solving skills of talented Indian youth towards a nuanced understanding of emerging and reemerging issues that impact peace and sustainability. Funded by UNESCO MGIEP and hosted at the Humanitas College, Kyung Hee University, South Korea, this intensive action-driven fellowship will use proven case-studies from the Asia-Pacific region to nurture the skills of the fellows towards promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development in India and globally.
