The research priorities of the Alan W. Heston Fellowship emphasize advancing statistical methodologies and applications within the International Comparison Program (ICP), while also fostering the development of new and improved data sources for price and quantity comparisons. A central focus is on enhancing the understanding of global economic development and living standards through innovative uses of Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs).
The fellowship also seeks to strengthen national and regional statistical frameworks, encouraging strategies that improve user engagement and communication. In addition, it promotes research closely aligned with the current ICP agenda, particularly in exploring alternative data sources such as scanner data, web scraping, and satellite imagery, as well as integrating ICP with the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
During the fellowship, participants are expected to produce both intermediate and final outputs. At the intermediate stage, fellows should prepare a summary of their findings accompanied by an updated budget table and timeline and also hold a meeting with the Fellowship Secretariat. For the final stage, fellows are required to draft a piece intended for publication on the Data Blog, as well as prepare either a draft or completed research paper along with a brief plan outlining future publication prospects.
Prior experience in related research fields and a focus on applying findings to improve national or regional statistical systems will be preferred.
The International Comparison Program (ICP) is one of the largest and most statistical initiatives in the world. It is managed by the World Bank under the auspices of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) and relies on a partnership of international, regional, sub-regional, and national agencies working under a robust governance framework and following an established statistical methodology.
