The fellowship focuses on independent research. Every fellow selects a specific program where they lead a project on a pressing global issue. In the Africa and Digital Society sector, this might involve analyzing how digital infrastructure and AI governance reshape state-citizen relationships. Those focused on the Environment and Society Centre work on mechanisms for a just energy transition and sustainable resource use. Meanwhile, the Europe Program explores strategic sovereignty and the reduction of critical dependencies, while the Global Economy and Finance program investigates the future of the US dollar and the economic disruption caused by agentic AI.
Health and law also form critical pillars of the institute’s work. The Global Health Program tackles issues of health sovereignty and supply chain resilience for future emergencies. In the International Law Program, research focuses on the rule of law, the prohibition of force, and competition over international spaces like the Arctic and outer space. For those interested in stability and defense, the International Security Program examines modern deterrence strategies and the impact of disruptive technologies on strategic stability.

Geopolitical shifts are analyzed through dedicated regional initiatives. The Latin America Initiative looks at mineral production and strategic autonomy, while the Middle East and North Africa program explores governance in the Gulf and regional climate policy. The Russia and Eurasia Program examines shifts in the Russian political system and its relations with the Global South. Finally, the UK in the World and US and North America programs chart the future of strategic relations, trade policies, and security ties in the context of the evolving US-China rivalry.
A key component of the experience is the Leadership Masterclass Program. This training focuses on the essential skills needed for impact in the professional world, such as policy communication, media engagement, and strategic networking. The goal is to ensure that research does not stay hidden in journals but actually informs public debate and government action. Fellows are encouraged to collaborate across departments, attending events and contributing to the institute’s broader intellectual output. By the end of the term, each fellow completes a major piece of work, such as a research paper or a series of policy briefings, that contributes directly to the mission of building a secure and prosperous world.
