The maiden edition of FMN’s Prize for Innovation aimed to foster creative ideas. The fifth season of FMN’s Prize for Innovation (FMN PFI 5.0) focuses on Innovative Practices in Cassava Production and Processing. The competition is split into two categories, to accept entries from Nigerian MSMEs and Nigerian students in undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Nigeria is globally recognized as the largest producer of cassava, yet the sector faces persistent challenges including high post-harvest losses, traditional processing inefficiencies, and fragmented supply chains. The FMN Prize for Innovation 5.0 is designed to bridge these gaps by identifying and supporting indigenous solutions that can revolutionize how cassava is grown, harvested, and converted into industrial and food-grade products.

The initiative acknowledges the distinct roles played by different sectors of society. For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the program acts as a growth engine, seeking out businesses that have already moved past the ideation phase and are ready to deploy scalable solutions that can integrate into large-scale industrial ecosystems. For Students, it serves as a platform for intellectual discovery, encouraging the next generation of food scientists, engineers, and agronomists to bring their classroom theories into the real world to solve actual industrial bottlenecks.

The FMN Prize for Innovation represents a vision far beyond a simple competition. It is a commitment to “Feeding the Nation, Everyday” by aligning with Nigeria’s national agenda to reduce food imports and strengthen the “Made in Nigeria” brand. By focusing on cassava—a crop deeply rooted in Nigerian culture, the initiative creates a practical ripple effect. This includes improving the daily lives of smallholder farmers and making agro-processing much more efficient. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure high-quality raw materials are readily available for the production of flour, starch, ethanol, and animal feed.

The FMN Prize for Innovation 5.0 is more than just an award; it is a call to action. It is an invitation for Nigerian innovators to reclaim the narrative of the cassava industry through technology, sustainability, and efficiency. Through this commitment, Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc continues to nurture a culture of excellence, ensuring that the agricultural sector remains a vibrant pillar of the Nigerian economy for generations to come.
