The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University promotes and supports research consistent with its mission to discover and disseminate knowledge of the plant kingdom. To foster both independent and collaborative work, the Arboretum offers fellowships and awards to students, postdoctoral researchers, and professionals of the biological and horticultural sciences.

The Ashton Award for Student Research supports investigations by graduate and advanced undergraduate students working on Asian tropical forest biology. Awards of up to $4,000 are granted to support student research expenses. Awards are granted through a competitive review process. Selection of recipient(s) will be based on the educational background of the student and their readiness to conduct the proposed research; the quality of the proposed research; and the relevance of the proposed research to the mission of the Arnold Arboretum.

The Ashton Award for Student Research is made possible by the generosity of Professor Peter Ashton and his wife, Mary Ashton through the Peter and Mary Ashton Training Fund. The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University stewards one of the world’s most comprehensive and best documented collections of temperate woody plants, with particular focus on the floras of eastern North America and eastern Asia.

Many of the plants originate from collecting expeditions, others derive from horticultural experimentation, and some were existing vegetation when the Arboretum was founded in 1872. The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University discovers and disseminates knowledge of the plant kingdom to foster greater understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of Earth’s botanical diversity and its essential value to humankind.
