Call for International Journalist’s Programmes George Weidenfeld Fellowship 2026 is open now!!!

The German-British Programme of the International Journalists’ Programmes (IJP) was founded in 1995 to promote understanding and balanced reporting between Germany and the United Kingdom. In an era when the relationship between the two countries is often portrayed through contrasting or even misleading narratives—especially since Brexit—this initiative serves as an essential bridge between media cultures. By fostering professional exchange and cooperation, it strengthens journalistic objectivity and cross-cultural awareness.

Since 2000, the programme has proudly borne the name of Lord George Weidenfeld (1919–2016), a renowned British publisher and publicist whose legacy of fostering dialogue and mutual respect continues through this exchange. The programme operates under the patronage of the respective British and German ambassadors in Berlin and London.

Each year, the IJP George Weidenfeld Bursary offers journalists from both countries a unique opportunity to work in one another’s media environments. Fellows spend several weeks in British or German editorial offices that reflect their professional interests, while simultaneously reporting for their home media. This immersive approach allows participants to gain direct experience with the political climate, economic structures, cultural dynamics, and everyday life of the host country. The programme usually begins with a three-day introductory event in London or Berlin. This is immediately followed by eight weeks working for a German or British outlet. Following the final conference, the fellows submit their journalistic work and a report of at least three pages.

Following the placement, the programme concludes with a final meeting in Berlin (2–4 December 2026). Fellows are required to submit a concise report summarizing their professional experiences and published work.

Each participant receives a stipend of €3,800 to help cover travel, accommodation, and personal expenses during the exchange. Work compensation from the host newsroom may vary and cannot be guaranteed.

IJP, a German non-profit organization, organizes similar journalist exchange programmes with more than 40 countries and regions worldwide, from the United States and Northern Europe to Asia and Africa. Through the German-British Bursary, journalists not only expand their professional skills and networks but also contribute to a deeper, more nuanced understanding between two influential nations.
