The program incorporates a range of reporters, editors and visual journalists. Typically, about 30 fellows are accepted per year, although the number may vary. The fellows handle the kind of work that their other full-time journalists perform. They generally post reporting jobs, as well as roles in photo, graphics, design, video, audio, audience and opinion. Fellows will work full time, and they will be paid and will receive benefits. They are guild-represented employees.

The fellows will work from their New York headquarters, but some opportunities may be available in the Washington and San Francisco offices.

Their newsroom has adopted a hybrid routine that includes both in-person and at-home work. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Applicants to positions in London must be authorized to work in the United Kingdom. They will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but will consider applicants with a valid student visa that can be extended with Optional Practical Training.
