In a strategic effort to showcase national achievements in advancing women’s status, the Supreme Council for Women in the Kingdom of Bahrain sought to promote best practices globally and support progress toward gender justice and development goals. To this end, the Council initiated collaboration with UN Women to launch an international edition of the “Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa Award for the Empowerment of Bahraini Women.” Recognizing the award’s national success and its distinctive qualitative impact, UN Women agreed to adopt and elevate the initiative, aligning it with global standards and practices.

The award aims to:

  • Highlight the contribution of the public and private sectors, civil society, and women’s rights champions to worldwide efforts for the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
  • Promote women’s empowerment and equality between men and women.
  • Encourage innovative approaches and solutions to achieve women’s empowerment in policy and programming, and provide a global space to celebrate these achievements.
  • Foster creative and inclusive thinking by communities to collaborate to achieve women’s empowerment, recognizing that equality for all means prosperity for all and sustainable development for communities and nations.
  • Vision: To encourage national efforts in the United Nations member states aimed at empowering women and activating their role as an equal partner in driving the wheel of comprehensive sustainable development.

The Supreme Council for Women works to disseminate the best practices to elevate women’s position at the global level and support the achievement of gender equality within the Sustainable Development Goals. They seek applicants who can showcase measurable impact over at least three years, emphasizing women’s participation in planning and decision-making while aligning with the UN SDG.
