Sexual assaults have been rampant in Bangladesh and with the advent of social media people are able to voice their opinions on these events. However, we’ve seen countless examples of individuals justifying rape, victim blaming and even encouraging the perpetrators on Facebook. And these are not uneducated men who do not understand what has happened. These are regular people and even young people. We, here at Voice for Change believe there is something fundamentally wrong with the narrative that exists and there must be something we can do to fix this problem. To fuel that notion, Voice for Change along with the winners and grant receivers of our competition have come up with “Not Her Fault.”
“Not Her Fault” is a seminar on women empowerment for the youth which addresses the patriarchal stigma, victim blaming, rape culture and gender disparity in Bangladesh. The workshop will dig deep into the root causes of these issues and conceptualize a scheme through which we can encourage young people engage in the discourse of sensitive matters regarding women to eventually desensitize these topics and remove the taboo that exists in society surrounding them.
The event will feature a workshop on women’s issues which include but are not limited to:
1. The Problem of Patriarchy
2. Women’s Rights
3. Gender Discrimination
4. Rape Culture and Victim Blaming
The interactive session will deal with why we need discourse, where our society fundamentally does it wrong and the inner nuances of women’s rights and gender discrimination in the context of our society.
