Bangladesh-Chair: Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Professorial Fellowship 2020 in Germany.

Applications are solicited for the above-named Chair at the South Asia Institute (SAI), Heidelberg University, Germany for the Summer Semester, 2021 (April to September 2021).

Responsibilities of the Chair Include:

  •  Teaching (two hours/one class per week) as per the curriculum requirements of Heidelberg University
  • Supporting the development of new teaching initiatives in consultation with colleagues from Germany
  • Contributing to developing research projects and other joint activities involving Bangladesh which would be mutually beneficial and sustainable for both Heidelberg and Bangladesh scholars
  • Taking part in departmental seminars, conferences and faculty meetings
  • Delivering two public lectures, which will be known as the “Bangladesh Lectures”

The South Asia Institute at Heidelberg University (SAI) was established in 1962. Unlike other European universities at that time and subsequently, the SAI has always been keen not to limit South Asian studies to India but to include India’s neighbors by broadening the Institute’s regional focus.

Benefits

  • The Government of Bangladesh will generally bear the cost of salary (3,500 Euros per month), health insurance, visa and international air passages (business class) for the holder of the Chair and his/her spouse.
  • Suitable accommodation will be arranged by the Embassy of Bangladesh in Berlin, Germany, in consultation with Heidelberg University at the cost of the Government of Bangladesh.
  • Heidelberg University shall provide certain facilities including office space and assistance and access to library.

Eligibilities

  • The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in either social sciences, humanities or geography matching one of the professorships at the SAI (Anthropology, Development Economics, Geography, History, Cultural and Religious History of South Asia, Modern South Asian Languages and Literatures, Political Science) or one of the cooperating chairs at Heidelberg University (Global Art History, Visual and Media Anthropology, and Buddhist Studies).
  •  He or she should be a citizen of Bangladesh and a Professor of a public university or a recognized public research institute in Bangladesh.
