Vienna Biocenter Summer School 2023 is a research-oriented fully-funded summer scholarship in Austria. The 9-week summer research program enables extraordinary and dexterous students to research life sciences under the supervision of the world’s best mentors in one of Europe’s leading research centers. The program provides a dynamic and vibrant scientific environment to talented students who are eager toward research and development-oriented scientific innovations. The best of this Vienna summer school 2023 is that fellow students are given the opportunity to come to Europe for free and learn the use of the latest technologies and work in the best labs in the world. The Vienna Biocenter is enriched with a diverse range of research projects. The summer student program is designed in a way in which each fellow would be allotted a faculty member with whom the fellow will closely and independently. The Biocenter is known for its highly accomplished faculty. For example, Kim Nasmyth received Breakthrough Prize in life sciences for his revolutionary work on chromosome segregation. Similarly, Emmanuelle Charpentier and Janifer Duanda received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The list is long; through this international summer opportunity, promising students will get a chance to learn from such highly influential minds and personalities.

The Vienna Biocenter is an agglomeration of Europe’s five leading research centers. This program is a possibility for exceptional undergraduate students to start their practical experience at these top research institutions. All these research projects that are being continued in the Biocenter are related to the latest issues regarding molecular biology, neuroscience, immunology, bioinformatics, RNA, stem cells, biochemistry, etc. The participants of this fully-funded summer school take part in all the practical lab work as well as the lab meetings and the journal clubs. The scientists at the lab use all the bottom-up approaches to find the results of the experiments and hence, the participants get themselves enriched with such high models of learning and practicing.

In this research summer school in Europe, the undergraduates not only gain practical knowledge of science but also grasp the true ideas of cutting-edge research infrastructure. In addition, the program fellows get to know the silk-stacking, liberal, and propertied culture of Europe by staying there. To make the students more cooperative and collaborative, the Vienna Biocenter comes up with many social events like the organization of referrals and symposiums. The fellows get the opportunity to interact with each other in a friendly environment. In order to make the experience substantial, the Vienna Biocenter Ph.D. students are being encouraged to join the two-day retreat; organized by the students outside Vienna in any hotel. The Biocenter summer school for international students concludes with a symposium in which scholars present their ideas, results, and findings in short talks. In the end, the prizes are also distributed to the winners which is really a thing of excitement in this program.

Eligibilities

  • Applicant needs to be studying a degree in a Life Science related subject and have one of the following: Completed at least 2 years of a University study (e.g. 2-3 years of a Bachelor (Hons) study or 1 year of a Master study – by 30 June) as follows:
  1. In Year 3 of a 4-year BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in a Life Science related subject
  2. In Year 4 of a 4-year BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in a Life Science related subject WITH an acceptance or intention to apply to a Master program (this will be checked later)
  3. In Year 1 of a 2-year Master course, MSc in a Life Science related subject
  4. In Year 2 of a US undergraduate Bachelor in a Life Science related subject
  5. In Year 2 of a 4-Year BTech (India) in a Life Science related subject
  • 3-months research experience
  • Good academic record
  • High level of English language
  • Evidence of enrolment in a University program for the current academic year and the next year (if possible)
  • MDs may only apply if they have completed 3-4years of their studies and have the relevant research experience, they must also intend to study a Ph.D. in a Life Science related subject after completion of their current studies
