The ISRA Global Scholarship Award is part of the Fund for Shari’ah Scholars in Islamic Finance, which was established to enhance knowledge and research, strengthen talents, and encourage intellectual discourse in the field of Shari’ah in Islamic Finance. The Fund represents Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) commitment towards strengthening the development of the Islamic finance industry. The application is open to all nationalities pursuing postgraduate studies (Doctoral & Master) in the field of Shari’ah or Islamic finance at recognized institutions of higher learning in Malaysia.

The scholarship covers academic tuition fees, book allowance, equipment allowance, conference allowance, thesis/end of study allowance. Though a non-Shari’ah degree holder would not be eligible to be considered for the scholarship, those holding a degree related to Islamic studies and having two-years working experience in Shari’ah matters in an Islamic financial institution could still be considered. This scholarship is exclusively for students who possess specifically bachelor degree in Shari’ah or its equivalent such as Bachelor in Shari’ah, Muamalat, Fiqh Muamalat, Shari’ah Law, Islamic Jurisprudent etc. Applicant must pursue their study in Shari’ah, Fiqh, Shari’ah law, Islamic Finance/banking or its equivalent.

The International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance, more commonly known by its acronym, ISRA, has been established to promote applied research in the area of Shari’ah and Islamic finance. It also acts as a repository of knowledge for Shari’ah views (fatwas) and undertake studies on contemporary issues in the Islamic financial industry. Moreover, ISRA contributes to strengthening human capital development in Shari’ah expertise relevant to Islamic finance and provides a platform for greater engagement amongst practitioners, scholars, regulators and academicians via research and dialogue, in both the domestic and international arenas. Through pioneering research and rigorous intellectual dialogue, ISRA aims to promote innovation and dynamism and thus extend the boundaries of Islamic finance. It is envisioned that with greater research and dialogue, mutual respect and recognition will emerge within the global community of the Islamic financial industry.

  2. Award
    1. Maximum scholarship coverage for a PhD student is three (3) years.
    2. Maximum scholarship coverage for a Master student is two (2) years.

Eligibilities

  • Obtained a Bachelor Degree in Shari’ah from recognised local or international universities (Bachelor degree in Shari’ah, Muamalat, Jurisprudence, Islamic Law, Fiqh, Usul al-Fiqh or its equivalent);
  • Obtained an offer to pursue or is currently pursuing Doctoral or Master studies in Shari’ah, Islamic finance or its equivalent in a full-time mode;
  • Obtained a minimum CGPA of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale), 4.5 (on a 5.0 scale), 80% (on a 100% point scale), pass with distinction or its equivalent;
  • Fulfilled or passed language proficiency requirements specified by the programme;
  • Applicants should NOT be in receipt of any other scholarship award or financial assistance.

Application Process

Please download the application form and attach all required documents

  • Application form;
  • A copy of letter of offer; an official letter of admission from the institution of higher learning confirming applicant’s placement at the institution;
  • A copy of academic certificates and full transcripts – Bachelor and/or Master’s degree;
  • A photocopy of personal identification/passport;
  • Two letters of recommendation from referees;
  • A copy of thesis proposal – applicable for programme by researcher or coursework & research.
