Swedish Institute Visby Programme Scholarships provides funding for academic mobility and provides PhD students and postdoctoral researchers from the Baltic Sea region to be able to carry out research projects at Swedish universities. The Swedish Institute Visby Programme Scholarships 2019-2020 aims to build an integrated, knowledge-based and research-intense region centered on the Baltic Sea and including the EU Eastern Partnership countries and Russia.

The Swedish Institute is a public agency that encourages interest and trust in Sweden around the world. We operate in the fields of culture, education, science and business in seeking to strengthen ties and promote development.
They build up lasting relations between Sweden and other countries with a view to enhancing Sweden’s attractiveness. They disseminate information, develop skills, promote cultural exchange and cooperation, and provide funding and grants and collaborate and enter into partnerships with businesses, universities, cultural institutions and embassies.

SI also engages in extensive cooperation with developing countries. The focus is on enhancing the skills of individuals who have the potential to contribute to the development of democracy and rights. By linking them up with Swedish actors in the field, they establish relationships that are of mutual benefit. They present Sweden as a good country to live in, in order to attract students, researchers and talents.
They bring to life the narrative about contemporary Sweden – the society that has produced numerous Swedish successes in the fields of innovation, sustainability and creativity. They act in dialogue with the opinion-formers, decision-makers and talents of today and tomorrow, both at home and abroad.

Meetings and discussions also take place in our digital channels, at Swedish embassies around the world and at the SI’s Swedish Cultural Centre in Paris.

Another area of work involves developing cooperation around the Baltic Sea and Eastern Europe. Robust, long-term partnerships improve the chances of achieving sustainable development.

Eligibilities

  • PhD student – PhD students/candidates applying for one long-term visit of 6, 9 or 12 months.
  • Postdoctoral researcher – Postdoctoral researchers applying for one long-term visit of 6, 9 or 12 months. Holders of a PhD degree, preferably from 2014 or later.
  • Senior researcher – Holders of a PhD degree who do not fit into the category of postdoctoral researchers, above, applying for one long-term visit of 6 months maximum.
  • Sandwich model – PhD students, postdoctoral and senior researchers applying for a scholarship over several shorter visits. Maximum three research visits per year, over three years. You may apply for the total number of months as specified for each category above (minimum 6 months). Each visit must be minimum 1 month. The scholarship visit(s) must be carried out by the end of 2021.
    You cannot be granted a scholarship if you:

    • have already lived in Sweden for two or more years when the scholarship period begins
    • already have a permanent Swedish residence permit
    • have a Swedish work permit and are currently employed in Sweden
    • apply for a scholarship at the PhD level but are not enrolled in ongoing PhD studies outside of Sweden
    • apply for a scholarship at postdoctoral level, but do not hold a PhD degree
    • have already been awarded three or more scholarships/grants from SI.
