The Summer School of Journalism and Socio-cultural Research is an in-person intensive program for young journalists, bloggers, and researchers worldwide. The school is held annually from mid-July to early August in Prague at the Charles University Department of Philosophy. This year the School will be held at Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany. The School is an excellent media training and a unique opportunity to broaden your network of contacts. Their goal is to create and sustain a vibrant alum community. An essential aspect of the course is media projects which participants develop at seminars with professional editors and finalize upon completing the study program. Most classes are conducted in Russian.

The topics for School 2023 are:

  • Creative writing and storytelling
  • Investigative journalism
  • Media management
  • Promotion of scientific findings
  • AI tools in media

They are looking for individuals passionate about content creation from around the world. The School’s program is helpful for journalists and researchers who want to promote scientific findings. They want to ensure maximum diversity of professional backgrounds: journalism, Slavic studies, sociology, political science, cultural studies, and art history. The Summer School aims to help participants develop journalistic skills to work in media or effectively use media tools.
The Summer School of Journalism and Socio-Cultural Research is designed for those with basic media skills who want to reach the next level. At the end of the training, participants are required to prepare their individual media projects for publication. The School prefers applicants with up to three years of experience in journalism or related fields. However, work experience is NOT a mandatory requirement.

A professional jury evaluates all applications for the Summer School. The jury, which consists of school management, journalists, and media managers, selects the participants of the summer school. The jury evaluates applicants based on the potential benefit of the course of study for the candidate, the relevance and practicality of the proposed media projects, and the confidence of the jury in the candidate’s ability to execute the project independently.

Preference is given to projects focused on a medium-term perspective and planned to culminate in a series of materials or themed cycles.

Application Process

  • Applications open every year in the spring. Applications can be submitted online by completing the form on their website.
  • The most important part of an application is your media project concept.
  • They request applicants to clearly state the theme of their journalism project, explain its relevance, specify the format of the project, and develop a preliminary work plan. It is important that the project be realistic and that the author be prepared to complete it by the end of the calendar year.
