Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship 2019 in Japan
  • October 25 - December 15, 2018
  • Partial Scholarship

Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship is for overseas students who are scheduled to get enrolled in a Japanese university. All Rotary International Districts in Japan are opened for 2019 sessions.

A group of schools have been designated to participate in the scholarship program. Each may recruit, screen and nominate candidates for scholarships. Their nominations are forwarded to the Rotary Selection Committee for  final review and decision, which will be within the school’s Rotary District. The selection process, therefore, is two-tiered: the first stage is conducted by the schools and the second stage, by the Rotary Selection Committee.

The scholarship supports excellent students from other countries who are studying or doing research at Japanese institutions of higher learning. The Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship expects, that its graduates will go on to play active roles in both their home countries and across the globe.

During their stay in Japan, Yoneyama Scholars experience firsthand Japanese culture and customs, enabling them to form bridges between their countries and Japan. Through their interactions with Rotary Club members, it is hoped that the Scholars will cultivate within themselves, a strong spirit of societal participation. In the future, they will be expected to make their own contribution to cultivating and sustaining world peace and harmony, an ideal embraced by all Rotarians.

The Yoneyama Scholarship Program was inaugurated to commemorate Mr Umekichi Yoneyama, a businessman who had great contribution on the establishment of Japan’s first Rotary club, the Rotary Club of Tokyo. Initiated by the club in 1952, the program was expanded to a joint undertaking by Rotary Clubs all across Japan.

In 1967, the program became the Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Foundation, having received authorization from the Ministry of Education (now the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).

The purpose of the Foundation is to grant scholarships to non-Japanese students who are pursuing academic studies and/or research in Japanese universities and other schools and who will go on to play active roles in their respective countries and international society.
