From among a large number of postgraduate courses offered by German institutions of higher education, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports a carefully chosen selection of programs of particular interest to junior executives from developing countries. These degree courses, which consist of one to two years of concentrated study, provide young, academically-trained professionals in leading positions from developing countries with the opportunity to engage in postgraduate education and training in their particular field or profession.

At present, postgraduate courses for the academic year 2019/2020 are offered in the following fields:

  1. Economic Sciences/ Business Administration/ Political Economics
  2. Development Cooperation
  3. Engineering and Related Sciences
  4. Mathematics
  5. Regional and Urban Planning
  6. Agricultural and Forest Sciences
  7. Natural and Environmental Sciences
  8. Medicine and Public Health
  9. Social Sciences, Education and Law
  10. Media Studies

The courses are open to all eligible candidates. Applications are welcomed from professionals with personal financial resources, from those who are funded by their government or company, or from those who are recipients of financial support from international sponsoring organizations. In addition, a limited number of full DAAD scholarships are available. The DAAD only awards these scholarships for postgraduate courses supported in this funding program. The scholarships offer foreign graduates from development and newly industrialised countries from all disciplines and with at least two years’ professional experience the chance to take a postgraduate or Master’s degree at a state or state-recognised German university, and in exceptional cases to take a doctoral degree, and to obtain a university qualification (Master’s/PhD) in Germany.

Which courses are being funded?

Individual scholarships are exclusively for Postgraduate courses in Germany that are listed on the “List of all Postgraduate courses with application deadlines”.

Funding Duration:12 to 36 months (dependent on study program)

Benefits

  • Depending on an academic level, monthly payments of 850 euros for graduates or 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
  • Travel allowance, unless these expenses are covered by the home country or another source of funding

Eligibilities

  • Candidates fulfil the necessary academic requirements and can be expected to successfully complete a study programme in Germany (above-average result for first academic exam – top performance third, language skills)
  • Candidates have a Bachelor degree (usually a four-year course) in an appropriate subject
  • Candidates have at least two years’ professional experience
  • Candidates can prove their motivation is development-related and be expected to take on social responsibility and initiate and support processes of change in their personal and professional environment after their training/scholarship
  • The last academic degree (usually a Bachelor’s degree) should have been completed no longer than six years previously

Application Process

DAAD application forms are available on the DAAD website.

Applications have to be sent to the respective course directly! Please refer to their respective websites for the application procedure (e.g. online application), for the application deadline and the documents to be submitted.

Applications sent to the DAAD will not be forwarded to the respective course/university. They become property of the DAAD and will NOT be returned. The applicant has no right to claim for reimbursement.

Applications sent via e-mail to the DAAD cannot be considered either during the selection process. For more details, please visit the official website.

Required documents (in the following order):

DAAD application form
hand-signed CV (please use the europass specimen form at http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/)
hand-signed letter of motivation (with reference to current occupation) maximum 2 pages
academic letter/s of recommendation (the letters must have a letterhead, a signature and office stamp and must be of recent date
professional letter/s of recommendation from the applicant’s employer (the letters must have a letterhead, a signature and office stamp and must be of recent date)
confirmation of employment from the employer in your home country and -if possible- a guarantee of reemployment upon your return home
Proof of language abilities:
a) English – TOEFL or IELTS (only an academic TOEFL is accepted)
b) German – necessary for the courses taught in German; for the courses taught in English, if available

NOTE: The complete applications have to be submitted in English or German to be considered. Incomplete applications cannot be considered.
