The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Office for ECOSOC Support and Coordination (OESC)/Non-Governmental Organizations Branch (NGO) internship is for two months, with the possibility of an extension, depending on the needs of the department.
The intern will be assigned to undertake research and prepare papers on various aspects of evolving relations between NGOs and the United Nations;
- In order to obtain experience in the areas of work of the NGO Branch, the following general responsibilities are also allocated:
- Review of applications of non-governmental organizations for consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC);
- Review of quadrennial reports presented by non-governmental organization in special and general consultative status with ECOSOC;
- Internet research, including gathering background information and materials for the compilation and preparation of reports and studies, as needed;
- Translation of articles, speeches, letters and other documents into languages known or spoken by the candidate;
- Attend and provide support to relevant conferences, meetings and events in the United Nations on issues involving non-governmental organizations, as deemed necessary by the supervising officer, and prepare summaries of those events; and
- Provide administrative support to the Branch as needed.

The internship is unpaid and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Eligibilities
- To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
- have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
- be computer literate in standard software applications.
