The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is a United Nations agency that works to promote and protect the human rights that are guaranteed under international law and stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948. The office was established by the UN General Assembly on 20 December 1993 in the wake of the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
(1) Assist in monitoring developments (human rights, politics and conflict) in the South East Asian region.
(2) Assist in preparing and distributing a daily news review with information on the human rights situation in the region. This daily review is shared with the OHCHR headquarters in Geneva.
(3) Assist in the documentation and preparation of submissions of cases of human rights violations in the region to OHCHR’s human rights mechanisms, including Special Procedures and Treaty Bodies.
(4) Assist in updating and maintaining information on Regional Office’s website.
(5) Assist in organizing workshops and seminars.
(6) Assist in maintaining and developing the office’s information and resource tools.
(7) Contribute to the preparation of internal and external reports on the work of the Regional Office.
(8) Attend and take notes in meetings/conferences as requested by the Regional Representative.
(9) Perform other tasks as necessary.

- The OHCHR, Regional Office for South-East Asia internship is for six months.
- The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
- Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Eligibilities
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation. Those enrolled in the International Law, Political Science, Social Science, Economics, History, and related fields are preferred.
