Watson is the training ground for next-generation innovators and social entrepreneurs.

In the semester incubator, students complete one semester of the Watson experience as a:

  • Study away/abroad from a home university
  • Gap semester before attending university
  • “Pre-career” semester after earning their degree elsewhere

Watson works with students on an individual basis regarding credit transfers back to their home institutions. All semester incubator students can complete the semester program from Chautauqua Park in Boulder, CO. The Watson experience is designed to equip the most promising members of the next generation with the skills, tools, and network they need to solve the toughest social, economic, and environmental challenges of our time.

Benefits

Watson students go through their semester as a 30 scholar cohort. Watson alumni come from 36 countries and diverse socio-economic backgrounds. What they have in common are a grit and idealism, and a drive to leave the world better than they found it. Some highlights of student life include:

  • An experiential scholar trip where the cohort travels to learn more about themselves and their classmates
  • Shared fully furnished and equipped apartment-style rooms.
  • Access to co-working spaces around town
  • Gym membership
  • Living within walking distance of lively downtown Boulder and within feet of dozens of hiking trails

Eligibilities

Watson is looking for early-stage social entrepreneurs, innovators, and changemakers with a bias towards action. They do not select based on GPA, SAT scores, nationality, or ability to pay. We look at the whole person, and evaluate each application using three main criteria:

  • The Person: What drives you?
  • The Idea: How sophisticated is your understanding of the problem and solution space?
  • The Stage: Is this person in “early prototyping?”
Eligible Regions: Open for All.

Application Process

  • Round 1: This takes the form of a written application submitted online. They want to know about you and your idea for social change. What motivates you? Who has most influenced you?
  • Round 2: If you are selected for round 2, you will be tested on your ability to communicate and think critically. They send you out to survey community members and create a short video introducing yourself to the Watson Team.
  • Round 3: If you are selected for round 3, They will interview you via video call to assess motivation, communication skills, and depth of thought.
