The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is offering a new program for U.S.-based reporters, focused on reporting on issues that span the U.S.-Mexico border, including human rights violations, immigration, corruption and drug trafficking.
During this program, six U.S.-based reporters will work with ICFJ and the Border Center for Journalists and Bloggers (BCJB) and participate in the following activities:
- A two-day orientation (June 28 and 29) in McAllen, Texas, which will focus on techniques for investigative reporting. The orientation will also include sessions about the specific context of the U.S.-Mexico border;
- A three-day “Investigathon” (planned for August; dates TBD) focused on developing investigative reports about the U.S.-Mexico border and building trust and connections between U.S. and Mexican journalists.
Journalists will be invited to submit investigative proposals on border issues during this program. ICFJ will provide either small reporting grants or fellowship funding (depending on reporters’ individual needs) to produce the proposed investigation. All project participants are expected to complete at least one investigative report throughout the duration of the program. ICFJ will provide editors for all projects and data visualization services (if necessary).
Journalists accepted into the program will be asked to participate in all stages of the program.

- There are two types of funding available.
- The first is small reporting grants.
- The amounts will depend on a submitted budget, and only cover expenses associated with the production of investigative reports (i.e. travel expenses, fixers/interpreters, access to public documents, etc.).
- The second are investigative reporting fellowships, which will cover both a stipend and reporting expenses.
- There are fewer fellowships available, and fellowships will likely be granted to more experienced investigative reporters with a proven track record.
- The provision of either a small reporting grant or fellowship will be at the discretion of ICFJ and BCJB.
Eligibilities
- Journalists (freelancers and individuals working for established media outlets) who work with any medium
- Investigative reporting skills are not necessary but applicants with such skills will be prioritized
- Proficiency in Spanish is not required but will be looked upon favorably
