The NATO Defense College currently offers three fellowships each year in the field of defence & security policy research related to NATO. The objective is to promote research and policy analysis in areas of particular interest to the NATO Member States.

Since the programme’s inception in 2015, the College has awarded a total of 5 Eisenhower Fellowships.

Named after the College’s founder, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, he programme began in 2015; each year the NDC Research Division selects – on a competitive basis – three NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellows:

  • Senior Eisenhower Defence Fellow (for 4 months) and
  • Eisenhower Defence Fellows (3 months each).

Eligibilities

  • Candidates will be selected on the basis of their specific aptitude and experience for carrying through a major defence or security research project related to NATO, its member states and/or the Partner country (research projects unrelated to NATO will not be considered).
  • Criteria for selection include academic qualifications, quality of research proposal, professional experience and publication record. Candidates must have a good working knowledge of English or French and be computer literate.
  • Applicants are invited to submit proposals reflecting the priorities and challenges for the Alliance as outlined in the 2010 Strategic Concept and the 2016 Warsaw Summit Declaration.
  • In 2018 preference will be given to those proposals addressing the following topics: Russia, security and defence challenges on the Eastern and Southern Flanks of the Alliance, and relations with strategic Partners
Eligible Regions: Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro (upon accession), the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States

Application Process

The NDC Research Fellowship Selection Committee meets in October/November each year, to review all the applications received. A staff member of NDC Research Division may contact prospective candidates for further clarification of their applications before that date, but applicants should be aware that a final decision on their application will be made only when the Committee concludes the selection process (by 30 November). The Committee may select up to three candidates from NATO countries. Selected candidates will be notified in writing immediately thereafter and they will receive the latest version of the NDC Fellows’ Manual to prepare themselves for their stay at the College in Rome. Due to the large number of applicants, only candidates selected for the Fellowships will be contacted.
