The Institute of Political Science of the University of Wroclaw invites students and Ph.D. candidates to submit their proposals for the XIV International Student Conference “Politics & Society in Central and Eastern Europe”, 22 May 2018. The conference is designed to enable the presentation of research findings of young researchers interested in current developments in Central and Eastern European politics and societies.

The theme for the upcoming conference is “Trust in Political Institutions”.

Trust is one of the key factors for legitimized politics and for the society as such. In regard to politics, it significantly determines acceptance of power and influences its stability. Trust is also the basic element of social relationship and social network. It builds social capital and social cohesion which underlie the civic society.

Politicians, officials, judges, police officers, but also our fellow citizens, neighbors, activists, and social leaders can be trusted or distrusted. Furthermore, the institutions can be trusted or distrusted: the government, the parliament, political parties, courts, the police, the army, inter- and transnational institutions, labor unions, churches, and NGOs. The broader meaning of institution leads us to reflections on trust in such institutions as free speech, the three-way division of power or private property. Some of the aforementioned examples have a purely political character, whereas others are related to the social system in general. In sum, they all affect the politics and particular policies.

Research into the Central and Eastern European politics and societies reveal a high level of distrust. It refers to both politicians and political institutions, and also to relations between citizens. This situation challenges the political elites, media, civil society organizations and also scholars, particularly in the field of political science, sociology, international relations, economics, history, and anthropology.

They welcome proposals addressing the following as well as other topics related to the theme of the conference:

  • regional differences in trust in political institutions in Central and Eastern Europe;
  • the economic recession and trust in political institutions in CEE;
