The OceanVisions2019 – Climate Summit focuses on Successes in resilience, adaptation, mitigation, and sustainability.
The aim is to highlight ocean-based science and engineering successes in the areas of resilience, adaptation, mitigation and sustainability and promote scalable solutions across human, climate and ecological dimensions.
The program believes that by advancing our understanding of the ocean systems, we can increase our ability to plan and implement solutions and strategies from recognizing the role of the ocean dimensions. The summit will also focus on our current ability to generate integrated understanding and synthesis of the dynamics of exchange at the interface between the human, climate and marine ecosystems dimensions of the ocean.
There will be 2-3 invited guests who will conduct sessions along with giving lightning talks. Open discussions will be synthesized into the white paper to be published in the Frontiers of Marine Science special issue.
The summit is co-organized by scientists at Georgia Tech, Stanford University, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Smithsonian Institution in coordination with the IOC-UNESCO, the Ocean Conservancy and Georgia Aquarium.
The program in Ocean Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech begun in 2014 when a group of faculty from the schools of Biological Sciences (BIOL), Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and Earth & Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) gathered, coordinated, and integrated the ongoing research on ocean systems. By the Spring of 2015, a prospectus for the new program was approved from the Board of Regents (BOR) of the University of Georgia, and by the end of Fall 2015 a full proposal for a new Ph.D. degree in Ocean Science and Engineering was approved by the Institute Graduate Study Committee at Georgia Tech. In the Spring of 2016 the final proposal was submitted to the BOR and approved formally on 12th October, 2016, which is the official launch date for OSE.
The Program since then has worked to increase recognition for Ocean Sciences at GT, leveraging the strength and recognition of GT as a leader in engineering, and coinciding with an ongoing expansion in the life sciences highlighted in the GT’s strategic plan.

- The marine scientists and engineers will get to dialogue with and hear from multiple stakeholders and decision makers. Which will help them to better understand how their research may contribute to future ocean solutions.
- As funds are limited, priority will be given to eligible applicants requiring only partial support (e.g. airfare or hotel/allowance)
Eligibilities
- Early career scientists who are less than 35 years of age or less than 5 year post PhD can apply.
- The applicants must be a researcher from a developing country.
- Entrants have to submit at least one abstract to the session of their choice.
