GLF Kyoto 2019 in Japan (Climate Mitigation and Adaptation)
  • Partially Funded
  • Kyoto

GLF and the Youth in Landscapes Initiative are looking for young people from all over the world to join GLF Kyoto 2019. GLF Kyoto will focus on how to tackle climate change from the landscapes. On May 13, experts from science, business, policy, international development and more will come together in person – in the same place where the Kyoto Protocol was signed two decades ago – and online from around the world, to focus on sustainable landscapes as one of the keys to climate mitigation and adaptation. The live-streamed talks at the Kyoto International Conference Center, complemented by a comprehensive digital edition with live talks from five continents, will analyze on-the-ground solutions for the challenges highlighted by the IPCC in its recent reports and in its reunion taking place alongside GLF Kyoto.

Participants eager to actively contribute to a historic global dialogue on climate action are welcomed to join. They must have least two years of experience being involved in climate action activities, including restoration, facilitating land-based investment, safeguarding rights, food and nutritional security. This gives a great opportunity for participants to share stories.

The event offers an opportunity to review the latest science, launch new initiatives and pitch innovative ideas for landscapes-based climate action. Sessions will tie U.N. climate policy processes to real action at the landscape level, exploring successful landscape approaches that support the fight against climate change and alleviate poverty for the most vulnerable. Discussions will emphasize the roles of trade, food production, investment, lifestyle and diet in a climate-smart future and may include:

  • Practical approaches to implementing IPCC pathways to 1.5 degrees Celsius, focused on land-based solutions
  • Restoration opportunities for accelerating climate change mitigation and adaptation action
  • Innovative financial instruments to fund restoration and sustainable land use; strengthening the role of certification
  • Innovative legal reforms in tenure and land-based investments that safeguard the rights of women, youth and local and indigenous peoples
  • Ways of balancing food security with biodiversity and forest conservation and climate mitigation and adaptation
  • Latest knowledge and instruments to measure progress toward achieving the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement
