The H&M Foundation, which was funded by the Persson family (founders and majority owners of the H&M Group), supports the textile industry in halving its greenhouse gas emissions every decade by 2050, while simultaneously promoting a just and fair transition for both people and the planet. Its projects are strategically designed to target high-emission areas along the entire textile value chain where the H&M Foundation’s philanthropic strengths can have the greatest impact.

The Global Change Award is recognized as a global innovation challenge launched by the H&M Foundation in 2015 with the clear mission to accelerate the transition to a circular and planet-positive fashion industry. The GCA is actively looking for changemakers whose proposals fall into one of four overarching areas:
- Sustainable materials and processes: This includes innovative solutions such as low energy materials and new and recycled fibers, as well as sustainable energy practices, alternative wet processes, treatments and finishes, new construction techniques, and more.
- Responsible production: This area focuses on technologies and methodologies that improve energy efficiency, utilize renewable energy, enable prediction modelling, implement on-demand systems, improve waste management, and offer zero-waste solutions.
- Mindful consumption: This addresses consumer behavior and product lifespan with concepts like reshaping demand, improving garment care, extending garment life cycles, implementing recycling solutions, and pioneering new circular business models.
- Wildcards: This final category is reserved for unexpected impactful ideas that the organizers haven’t even thought of yet, or innovative concepts that amplify transformation across multiple areas of the textile value chain.
