The American Institute of Biological Sciences is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) scientific association dedicated to advancing the biological sciences to promote an increased understanding of all life. Their mission is to promote the use of scientific information to inform decision making and advance biology for the benefit of science and society. This mission is more relevant today than at any other point in history. The pace of change in modern society and the scope of the challenges requiring the insights derived from scientific study demand that AIBS provides the leadership and forum for the community to work collaboratively to advance integration in biology for the benefit of science and society. The organization is guided by a “strategic plan, released February 2019, with the endorsement of the 2018 and 2019 Board of Directors and AIBS staff, who were all integral to the plan’s creation.
AIBS builds programs and resources that advance education and research in the biological sciences. They actively collaborate with their member societies and organizations to develop resources and support initiatives that serve the biological sciences community.
AIBS Awards presented annually, AIBS recognizes individuals and organizations making significant contributions to the biological sciences through the Distinguished Scientist, Education, Outstanding Service, President’s Citation, Diversity Leadership, and Emerging Public Policy Leader awards.

- A trip to Washington, DC, to participate in the AIBS Congressional Visits Day, an annual event where scientists meet with lawmakers to advocate for federal investment in the biological sciences, with a primary focus on the National Science Foundation. The event will be held in spring 2020 (likely in March or April). Domestic travel and hotel expenses are paid for the winners.
- Policy and communication training, including information on the legislative process and trends in federal science funding, and how to engage with policymakers and the news media.
- Meetings with lawmakers to discuss the importance of federal investment in the biological sciences.
- A one-year AIBS membership, including a subscription to the journal BioScience and a copy of “Communicating Science: A Primer for Working with the Media.”
Eligibilities
- U.S. permanent residents enrolled in a graduate degree program in the biological sciences, science education, or a closely
allied field. - Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in and commitment to science policy and/or science education policy.
- Prior recipients, including Honorable Mentions, are not eligible for the award.
