The theme of this year’s edition of the Prize is “Ethics of Environment” with a specific thematic focus on the ethics of climate change and environmental sustainability – a goal that fully converges with UNESCO’s priorities. Nominations should strictly take into consideration this year’s theme and the specific thematic vision of the Prize.

About the Prize:

Established in 2003 by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its 166th session on the initiative of the Islamic Republic of Iran, this Prize, awarded every two years, is intended to reward the activities of individuals and groups in the field of ethics in science.

By thus promoting ethical reflection on issues raised by advances in science and technology, it is expected to help significantly to increase international awareness and highlight the importance of ethics in science.

The Prize owes its name to the renowned 11th-century physician and philosopher of Persian origin known in Europe as Avicenna (980-1038). A healer and a humanist, Avicenna developed an exemplary holistic approach that captures the essence of ethics in science and has thus come to serve as a source of inspiration for the promotion of this concern, which is of central importance to UNESCO. In Spring 2017, the Executive Board of UNESCO renewed the UNESCO Avicenna Prize for Ethics in Science for a period of six years.
