Study of the United States Institute For Secondary School Educators Program 2020
  • United States

U.S. Embassy Dhaka is pleased to announce the Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) for Secondary School Educators program, which will take place in summer 2020.  The SUSI program is a five-week exchange program sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

The Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) are five to six-week academic programs focusing on U.S. studies for small groups of foreign undergraduate students, scholars, and teachers. SUSIs aims to promote a better understanding of American people and institutions; explore the diversity and culture of the United States, and develop or expand curricula on U.S. studies in colleges and universities overseas. Hosted by universities and colleges throughout the United States, Institutes are designed to offer a balance between academic and experiential learning though an intensive academic program, site and cultural visits, an educational study tour, and opportunities to engage with American peers through homestays, community service, and research.

The program should not be viewed as a research program.  Participants are expected to participate fully, to attend all lectures and organized activities, and to complete assigned readings. Family members and/or friends cannot accompany participants for any part of the program.  Please note that teaching methodology and pedagogical methods will not be addressed formally during the Institute.

The one-week educational tour will take participants to another part of the United States where they will meet with local, state, private, and not-for-profit organizations.  The Institute will then conclude with two to four days in Washington, D.C. Participants are expected to be highly motivated and exemplary secondary educators who have clear plans to enhance, update, or develop courses and/or educational materials with a U.S. studies focus or component, and who are interested in introducing aspects of U.S. studies at their home institutions.   Successful candidates may be Ministry of Education officials, secondary school teachers involved in curriculum development, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, or related professionals with the ability to incorporate American studies in their educational institutions.
