International Conference on Entangled Englishes in Translocal Spaces 2020 in Dhaka
  • June 21 - 22, 2020
  • ULAB Department of English and Humanities House 56, Road 4A, Dhanmondi, 1209 Dhaka, Bangladesh.

ULAB Department of English and Humanities is going to organize an International conference on Entangled Englishes in Translocal Spaces 2020 in Dhaka.

Englishes are entangled in our lives. They are used in a range of meaning-making practices in diverse contexts across the world. In the process, they incorporate linguistic and cultural resources from multiple codes, modes, genres, locations and cultures. These Englishes, ideologically value-laden, segregate people, communities, and nations, empowering some while marginalizing others. Disproportionate access to Englishes based on individual demographic, cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds is perceived as a source of anxiety and apprehension.

Migrants, minorities, and stateless refugees experience linguistic discriminations in various forms for Englishes too. Considering the pervasiveness and strong ideologies associated with Englishes, the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) invites papers to configure and contest the hegemonic status of English in various domains of life. It also wants to initiate a discursive platform to explore possible ways of “de-utilisation” of Englishes for sustainable development of human resources.

200-300 word abstracts of papers, posters, panels, and postgraduate student presentations are invited on, but not limited to, the following topics:

– Sociolinguistics (e.g., Language & socioeconomic class, gender, style, varieties, identity etc.)
– Comparative Linguistics
– Language and Technology
– Language and Media
– Language Acquisition and Learning (L2, L3, L4, Lx)
– Language Policy, Language Planning
– Language Education

– Literature and New Englishes
– Postcolonial Writers in English
– Linguistic Imperialism
– Language as a Local practice
– Translinguistics and Translanguaging
– Linguistic Landscape and Multimodality
