The Global Center for Food Systems Innovation (GCFSI) is inviting proposals from universities, government or private laboratories or research organizations, for profit and non-profit companies and individuals meeting the requirement of the call to apply for the grants. Grant request can be made for three stages of projects – innovation scalability grants, innovation evaluation grants and early stage innovation grants.

Grant Categories

  • Early Stage Innovation Grants – up to $100,000 each for fund innovators with ideas to create, test and enable the scaling of innovations in the food system.
  • Innovation Evaluation Grants – up to $250,000 each for innovations that are developed but have not been fully deployed or rigorously tested in the field. Activities can be – field trials, stakeholder focus groups, refinement of the innovation design, and market assessments.
  • Innovation Scalability Grants – up to $500,000 each for innovations that have proven themselves functional and potentially feasible for broader deployment. A one-to-one private sector or non-USG funding match is required to help ensure that innovations are of interest to multiple stakeholders and relevant to local development conditions.

Thematic Areas:

  • Weather data for climate-smart agriculture
  • Improved ability of smallholder farmers to adapt to climate variability and change
  • Improved ability of agricultural researchers to provide agronomic recommendations
  • Assistance to small entrepreneurs in food processing
  • Innovations in the informal urban food sector
  • Gender-sensitive ICT-based approaches to improving women’s access to urban markets
  • Marketing meat and dairy products without extensive cold chain development
  • Projecting labor market and skill needs for agri-food businesses
  • Improving effective use of mobile phone-based agricultural services by small farmers
  • Promoting gender equitable access to profitable markets

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Proposals and ideas are invited from any country.
  • Private and government bodies, research institutions, universities working for profit and non-profit organization may apply for this grant.
  • Individual applying for this grant need to meet the requirements of RFA.
  • Proposals must be made to work on one of the above mentioned thematic areas.
  • In order for proposals to be selected, they must provide activity detail for any of the following countries:
    Feed the Future (FTF) focus countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nepal, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia
    Science, Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (STIP) focus countries: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mozambique, Philippines, and Uganda.

How to Apply:

Applications must be submitted via CREF Global’s Electronic Proposal Submission website. If not possible, an email can be sent for an alternate application submission process. Modifications can be sent until application deadline.

Complete application materials include – abstract, proposal (maximum 20 pages), team composition and curriculum vitae, project timeline, brief description on past performance, letter(s) of support, budget and other financial contribution (cost-share).
